The incidence of HIV is declining in most regions. Worldwide, the number of people newly infected with HIV dropped 33 per cent from 2001 to 2012. Still, 2.3 million people are newly infected by HIV each year, with 1.6 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa. The MDG target of halting and beginning to reverse the spread of HIV has been met.

Global malaria deaths fell by an estimated 26 per cent from 2000 to 2010. More than half of the 1.1 million lives saved were in the 10 countries with the highest malaria burden. Source: UN.org
