How Dr. Henry Cabrera Turned His Passion for Lavender into a Flourishing Business in South Kingstown, Rhode Island

After a full day as a local anesthesiologist, Dr. Henry Cabrera exchanges his white coat for the peaceful surroundings of Lavender Waves Farm. What began as a simple hobby has flourished into both a successful business and a cherished home. With farm animals freely roaming the property, visitors from near and far are drawn to experience this outdoor retreat.

Dr. Cabrera’s journey as an agricultural entrepreneur took shape in late 2016 when he acquired Lavender Waves Farm. His mission was to restore the land’s original beauty while incorporating sustainable, modern farming techniques.

Situated on 14 scenic acres in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Lavender Waves Farm is a paradise for lavender lovers. With over 4,000 perennial lavender plants representing a variety of species, the farm’s layout radiates from a charming central gazebo, offering a stunning and serene landscape for visitors to enjoy.

The farm transforms its harvested lavender into a range of products, including essential oils, lotions, and candles, all carefully packaged and sold.

However, Lavender Waves Farm offers more than just lavender—it’s also home to a diverse collection of nearly 100 animals. Among them are rare camels, chickens, guinea hens, ducks, geese, a striking white peacock, alpacas, and a vigilant llama, adding to the farm’s charm and appeal.

“A lot of people ask me what I do with the animals,” says Dr. Henry Cabrera. “And quite frankly, I just love the animals.”

The farm is home to a variety of friendly and distinctive animals, such as Gold-laced Brahma chickens and Pilgrim geese, each adding to the farm’s unique charm and personality.

Bringing Rhode Island’s Agricultural Legacy Back to Life

The land that Lavender Waves Farm now calls home holds deep agricultural roots, once known as Gatewood Farm, a renowned producer of bacon and sausage. However, as time passed, the property was subdivided and sold in pieces, leaving the farm neglected and in decline.

“The property has long-established agricultural roots,” explains Cabrera. “But farming is a tough business. Eventually, the property was subdivided and sold off to subsidize the farming operations throughout the years.”

When Dr. Henry Cabrera acquired the farm, he initiated a comprehensive restoration and enhancement project. The aging barn underwent a complete renovation, while new electrical and water systems were installed to modernize the property. Additional stables were constructed, and rotational grazing pastures were introduced to support the well-being of the livestock. A new garage was also built to store the farm’s equipment and supplies efficiently.

“When I was figuring out how to design the whole thing,” Cabrera says. “It just occurred to me to put a gazebo in the middle and then have all the rows of lavender meet right in the center. That’s what we did.”

The farm’s distinctive layout and design contribute to a truly remarkable space, enhancing not only the beauty of the lavender fields but also the overall experience for every visitor.

Lavender Waves Farm Events

As the lavender fields come to life in June, Lavender Waves Farm welcomes visitors to embrace the tranquility and participate in special events, such as lavender yoga. Every Sunday throughout the summer, guests can join yoga sessions surrounded by fragrant purple blossoms, promoting relaxation and renewal in the heart of nature.

The farm’s peak bloom season spans from mid-June to early August, marking the perfect time for the popular “Cut Your Own Lavender” event. During this period, visitors are invited to wander through rows of 4,000 lavender plants, handpicking their own bundles to take home. Dr. Cabrera also hosts engaging talks, sharing insights about the farm’s history, the various lavender species, and the best techniques for harvesting.

Lavender Waves Farm’s Luxurious Rustic Retreat

For those seeking a deeper connection with the lavender experience, the farm offers a charming one-bedroom suite with a blend of rustic elegance. Located above a converted garage, the suite provides guests with sweeping views of the vibrant lavender fields.

Every detail of the suite reflects a unique character, from the amethyst geode sinks in the bathroom to a custom coffee table crafted from an 80-year-old wood slab. An antique wheelbarrow adds to the rustic charm, while the lavender-themed color palette enhances the cozy, welcoming ambiance, making it the perfect getaway for guests.

“I call the farm suite ‘luxuriously rustic,’” Cabrera explains. “I wanted it to be a luxury place yet a rural, rustic place that people could enjoy.”

The Vital Role of Henry Cabrera’s Family

Though Henry Cabrera spearheads the efforts at Lavender Waves Farm, he readily credits his family for their essential support in making the farm a success. “This was not something I created on my own,” he says. “To do it, I’ve had to hire people from the very get-go. I’ve had my family here, and the teamwork aspect has been important.”

Cabrera’s parents have been essential to the farm’s development, relocating from Miami to assist in getting it off the ground. The family’s farming heritage runs deep, with ancestral roots in Cuba, where they once operated a farm before being forced to leave during the Fidel Castro regime.

“I’m sure [farming] is in my blood,” Dr. Cabrera expressed during an episode of OnlyGood TV. “My grandfather used to tell me stories about it. I often think ‘where would I be right now?’ if it weren’t for the Castro regime because I would probably be in Cuba, maybe managing some big tobacco plantations.”

Thanks to his family’s courage and resilience, Dr. Cabrera was able to build a successful life in America, becoming both a physician and the owner of a thriving lavender farm.
