Salt, Wind, and 48,000 LEDs: How The Bay Lights Were Rebuilt With J-P Conte’s Support

The Bay Bridge sits in a punishing environment. J-P Conte’s foundation and family history give context for why he keeps investing in projects built to endure. Saltwater air blows through the span year-round. Wind speeds spike without warning, and fog settles and clings.

The original Bay Lights lasted nearly a decade in these conditions before the hardware gave out in 2023. When J-P Conte agreed to fund the $11 million rebuild, the engineering had to account for every one of those forces.

What Destroyed the Original System?

Leo Villareal’s 2013 installation used 25,000 LEDs that were never rated for sustained marine exposure. Corrosion, moisture infiltration, and vibration degraded the components over time.

Ben Davis, founder of the nonprofit Illuminate, spent years planning a ground-up replacement. The failure wasn’t artistic; Villareal’s programming still worked. The hardware around it didn’t.

How Did Musco Lighting Rebuild It?

Iowa-based Musco Lighting designed a new system with 48,000 custom-engineered LEDs and a 10-year warranty. Project manager Adam DeJong described the approach (illuminate.org/2026/02/…): “Everything has been designed specifically for the Bay Bridge environment”.

Crews worked overnight shifts between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. for three to four months. Two sets of LEDs now wrap around the suspension cables on the bridge’s north side. Beyond infrastructure art, J-P Conte also funds immigration research through a named initiative at the Hoover Institution.

Why Did J-P Conte Back a Rebuild?

“This bridge and this light structure is going to be the heartbeat of the city,” J-P Conte said in an ABC7 interview.

J-P Conte is managing partner of Lupine Crest Capital, a family office. He funded the original 2013 installation and returned for the rebuild.
